Paul Ehrlich Foundation Awards Michael Reth Prof. Dr. Michael Reth has received the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaed- ter Prize from the Paul Ehrlich Founda- tion for his findings on the functioning of the immune system. The prize is worth 100,000 euros and is one of Germany’s most prestigious prizes for medical re- search. Reth studies how immunity de- velops at the molecular level in order to find new ways to treat cancer and infectious diseases. He is professor of molecu- lar immunology at the Institute of Biology III and director of the Cluster of Excel- lence BIOSS Centre for Biological Signalling Studies of the University of Freiburg. In addition, he serves as head of the Department of Molecular Immunology at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics. The Northern Black Forest as a Reality Lab Baden-Württemberg’s first nation- al park opened in January 2014 in the Northern Black Forest following a long and controversial political debate. From the coming year on, researchers from the University of Freiburg and the University of Applied Forest Sciences Rottenburg will track further develop- ments in a so-called reality lab. They want to study what ecological, social, and economic effects the national park has on the entire region. The topics in- clude tourism, nature conservation, in- frastructure, and social networking. The goal is to develop options for ac- tion in dialogue with the inhabitants of the Northern Black Forest. University Medical Center Revamps Website Clearly arranged and fast infor- mation for every target group: The Uni- versity of Freiburg Medical Center has a new and improved website. The site now includes service-oriented features designed to strengthen the image of the medical center as a home of ad- vanced medicine. A total of 15,000 pages present the entire range of ser- vices, with an emphasis on treatment, research, and teaching. The clearly ar- ranged menus help visitors find their way around the site and reach what they are looking for in just a few clicks. » www.uniklinik-freiburg.de App on Sustainable Consumption in Freiburg Students from the master’s program “Environmental Governance” at the Uni- versity of Freiburg have developed an app that serves as a compass for environ- mentally conscious and socially responsible food in Freiburg. “mAppetizing Freiburg” helps users find selected cafes, restaurants, or stores. In addition, an interactive map shows freely accessible apple trees and blackberry bushes. Users can enter their own tips into the database and share them with one another. The app is available free of charge at the iPhone App Store and on Google Play for An- droid smartphones. » www.mappetizing.de Civil Clause for the University The University of Freiburg has added a civil clause to its constitution. The clause states that research, instruction, studies, and continuing education must serve peaceful goals – while respecting the academic freedom guaranteed by the German Constitution. In the future, the Rectorate will report each year to the Sen- ate and the University Council on whether these goals were observed. The report must respect the rights of all concerned parties, especially academic freedom and the right to informal self-determination, and be made available to the public.
