ALUMNI ANSWER Photo : priva te Photo: DWP/Photolia Seminars and lectures aren’t the only things people recollect when they think back on their time as a student. Student life outside of the university is just as influential. Paul Bomhard asked Freiburg alumnae and alumni where and with whom they liked to party most – and whether there was a night they are especially fond of remembering. Silke Engel Head of the Department of Press Work and Public Relations, University of Potsdam Fields of study: Political Science, Modern German Literature, Law Years: 1991–1996 “I had the most fun in long hallways, under neon light. There were legendary parties right over my room on the first floor of my dorm in a former French military hospital on Engelbergerstraße. The best ones were spontaneous, where there was always a vibrant cosmos of numerous fields of study, nationalities, and personalities. What has stuck in my mind most, however, is my own exam celebration. It also took place at the dorms on Engelbergerstraße, but in the ‘official’ party cellar. It was the emotional climax of my years as a student – with live music by my favorite lecturer and a little show that my classmates and friends who worked with me as a student assistant for Prof. Dr. Oberndörfer pre- sented to me as a parting gift. The photos and atmosphere from that evening are still with me today.” Egon Kochanke Head of the German Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Fields of study: Political Science, History Years: 1973–1978 “One of the things I did most often early on was go to the wine festivals on Batzenberg and Kaiserstuhl with school friends I lived in an apartment with. Later, with new friends from my ancient history classes, I also discovered the Feierling Brewery, bars like Alte Universität, Burse, and Harmonie, and the Freiburg Wine Festival. Since I was receiving financial aid, however, I had to be careful what I spent. We did a lot of cooking in small apartments. My friend Wolf would play the guitar and sing Georges Moustaki songs, and we would have discussions over cheap edelzwicker wine or Fischerbräu beer. But the best party was after our exams in October 1977. We found a cabin in the Black Forest where almost all of us could sleep. We enjoyed homemade Zwiebelkuchen and new wine, and the music of Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson rang through the forest until late in the night.” history classes, I also discovered the Feierling Brewery, bars like Alte Universität, Burse, and Harmonie, and the Freiburg Wine Festival.
