Classroom Competence The University of Freiburg reformed its teacher education degree programs for the 2015/16 winter semester, intro- ducing a dual-major bachelor’s degree program. The new program has several functions: In addition to qualifying for admission to the Master of Education degree program and thus for employ- ment as a secondary school teacher, graduates will also have the option of going on to complete a master’s degree in an individual academic field or quali- fying for a career in another profession. The Master of Education program, which the university is developing together with the Freiburg University of Education, will be introduced in the 2018/19 winter semester. The Federal Ministry of Edu- cation and Research is providing almost seven million euros in funding for the partnership. At its core is the Freiburg Advanced Center for Education (FACE), where all actors involved in educating fu- ture teachers will conduct their projects. Insight into University History The University of Freiburg has purchased the so-called Freiburg–Vienna Statutes for 50,000 euros thanks to financial support from Baden-Württemberg’s Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts. The volume of manuscripts was written in the 1460s in a workshop in the Austrian capital Vienna and was possibly brought to Freiburg by the university’s founding professors. Among other things, it includes the Statutes of the University of Vienna, which served as a model for the founding of the University of Freiburg in 1457, as well as the later Freiburg matricula- tion oath. The Freiburg Uni- versity Archive intends to study the well-preserved decorated volume. New Faces in University Council The newly formed University Council, which took up its work on 1 October 2015, has elected Prof. Dr. Dr. Andreas Barner, managing director of Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH, as its new chair. The other new external members of the super- visory committee are Alfred Theodor Ritter, managing director of Alfred Ritter GmbH, and Prof. Dr. Sabine Rollberg, professor of artistic television formats, film, and television at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and managing editor at WRD/ARTE. The University Council is responsible for development at the Univer- sity of Freiburg and proposes measures concerning its profile. Leisure Magazine Now Online Doctoral and postdoctoral research- ers at the University of Freiburg’s Collab- orative Research Center (SFB) 1015, “Leisure: Concepts, Spaces, Figures,” have founded the online journal Muße. Ein Magazin (“Leisure: A Magazine”). It will be published once or twice a year and aims to initiate and deepen debates on spaces of scholarly and societal leisure. The contributions will include interviews, reports, essays, and reviews of films, books and music. A glossary will explain key concepts from leisure scholarship, and there will be a column introducing places of leisure. In addition, each issue will include one or two scholarly articles. » http://mussemagazin.de The Freiburg–Vienna Statutes are an important source on the early years of the University of Freiburg.
